
Few adults recognize just how wonderful it is to read proper young adult lit. In the age of romantasy, I fear we forget that YA is, often, a better (more magical, clearer, and less trapped under the heel of obscure yet weighty awards) literary distillation of human experience.
Here, Jandy Nelson has conjured up a mystical NorCal town in which to set her coming of age epic. Its writing is splendid, and it will make you want to move to wine country, learn to make a soufflé, and listen to all manner of Mazzy Star while doing so.
